Old vine zinfandel from our estate vineyard planted in 1985. We aren’t totally sure of all the varieties in the field blend, but I’ve found Cab Sauv, Merlot and Syrah vines out in the block so far. There aren’t many, but I would estimate that we have 5% mixed varieties in the field blend. Cold soaked for a week and then fermented with our native yeast culture, this wine reminds me of an old school claret wine vs. your typical Paso Zin. Plums, cassis and a touch of spice on the palate. Uber classy vintage for us out at Loomis #1. Oh — and why Loomis #1? Loomis was the ultimate tinkerer, and the part we enjoy most about having our own place is the constant tinkering required to make things happen. Why #1? Because we always have to be optimistic that we will get the opportunity to get a #2 someday. Can’t stop. Won’t stop.
