FROM ANDREW JONES

I must start off this fall’s wine release with an apology.

This season was not what I had anticipated. Things got bogged up a bit on the front end with entirely too much minutiae for myself and our team of 12 here at Field Recordings. Winter was warmer than expected. The vines woke up way too early from their winter sleep. We booked an extremely aggressive travel schedule that included stops in Tulsa, Branson, Minneapolis, Nashville, Omaha, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Richmond, Portland, Seattle and even Kelowna BC.

Long story short, we let a few things slip, and in the end, we weren’t able to throw the world’s greatest winery showcase of all time. Not only is it a cornucopia of food and wine and fun, it’s allegedly the only winery drift kart race on this planet. Yes, folks, I am talking about the Gnario Party and the epic fail that it was to not crown a 2026 Gnario Kart champion. So with that, I have a couple announcements.

The 2027 Gnario Party will be May 1, 2027.

Mark your calendars. Save the date. Two complimentary tickets for all club members. (We made sure not to schedule it the same weekend as our neighboring lettuce dispensary’s popular April sales event). Be on the lookout for more details, but we really want this to be the biggest party Tin City has ever seen. We will sell extra tickets if you want to bring a few friends. Stay tuned for all the particulars.

We stashed some cases of this year's Gnario 2 and Gnario 3 to start building up the excitement for 2027. Along with that, we bottled up an extra special reserve 1’Up Barbera best barrel blend to round out the Gnario offerings. Barbera has become one of the team’s favorite grapes the past few seasons. If we were to get an extra life in the wine business, there have been pipe dreams of a Barbera-only house that takes over the future California wine world.

For those unfamiliar with Gnario 2 and 3, these wines are made from some of our favorite local vineyards, which we planted with regional grapes from Italy to make unapologetically California wines of Italian descent.  Read all about it below…

SUPER GNARIO 2

$XX RETAIL / $XX CLUB

VARIETAL
100% Corvina

TASTING NOTES
Cranberries, orange peel with a touch of white pepper and bittersweet chocolate

THE STORY
Gnario 2 is our ode to Amarone. Cane cut and dried for 10 days on the vine before harvesting to concentrate the flavors while maintaining the natural acidity. Pop this one at the family holiday meal for your crusty uncle that swears by that 1-liter Napa Special Selection, and tell him this one will put some hair on his chest while washing down the prime rib.

SUPER GNARIO 3

$XX RETAIL / $XX CLUB

VARIETAL
100% Malvasia Bianca

TASTING NOTES
Fresh cut flowers, white peaches, hint of magic mushroom dust

THE STORY
Gnario 3 is a refreshing and crispy Malvasia Bianca from our buddy Joe’s vineyard out in El Pomar. Fermented and aged in stainless steel. Super floral without any sweetness. Make sure the nieces and nephews don't steal too many sips during your Thanksgiving spread. If there was ever a wine to pair with a jello salad, this is it.

1UP’D BARBERA

$XX RETAIL / $XX CLUB

VARIETAL
100% Barbera

TASTING NOTES
Slightly dusty Bing cherries and Caroline raspberries with a touch of rose petals

1up Barbera is an organic Barbera from a new vineyard out in Happy Canyon called Stagliano.  It just came into production in 2025, and in typical fashion, that first harvest tends to be off the charts. Since the vines are still maturing and not overly vegetative yet, the fruit is exposed early and throughout the season. All that sunshine transforms into a bunch of perfectly ripe cherries on the palate.

LE BON CLIMAT CHARDONNAY

$XX RETAIL / $XX CLUB

VARIETAL
100% Chardonnay

TASTING NOTES
Flavors of pineapple upside down cake with brioche characteristics. Nice toasty finish with notes of caramel and butterscotch.

THE STORY
To supplement the Gnario trio, we have a couple classic varietal wines along with a little bubbly.

The Le Bon Climat vineyard project is going on year 5 at this point. We have been bringing in all of the Chardonnay for our own use the past 2 years. This vineyard is a timeless classic in the Santa Maria Valley. Nothing fancy on our end. Hand harvested and sent directly to the press. The juice is settled overnight and then barrel fermented in French oak before being aged for 10 months. We used a couple new barrels for just a light kiss of toast on the wine so we don't overpower the tropical fruit on the nose. Sit on this one if you’d like for a few years. It’s definitely ready to go but we always talk internally that we hold the reds too long and drink the whites way too young. Bottle-aged fancy Chardonnay never fails.

THE ARMORY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

$XX RETAIL / $XX CLUB

VARIETAL
100% Cabernet Sauvignon

TASTING NOTES
Blueberry cobbler, dark chocolate, baseball glove leather and notes of spicy pepper with a warm holiday finish

THE STORY
Armory Cabernet is back after a one-year hiatus — we had a hiccup in the cellar and didn’t feel it was worthy of making the club last season. Dry farmed by our good friend Will John up in Adelaida and planted with vines I gave him: only heirloom cuttings from some of Napa Valley’s most historic vineyards. Will’s cab is so intense that we have to use at least 50% new French oak to keep things in check every vintage. One of these days, you’ll be hearing this vineyard called out in all the wine magazines as ground zero for decadent Cabernet in Paso Robles.

LANDSIDE SPARKLING PINOT NOIR

$XX RETAIL / $XX CLUB

VARIETAL
100% Pinot Noir

TASTING NOTES
Arvin watermelon, strawberry sorbet, hint of rosemary, green apple Blowpops, watermelon Jolly Ranchers

All in all, we hope that these 6 stellar selections make up for our arrears in party planning. We hope to see you at one of our fall & holiday events this year (more below!), and at the 2027 Gnario Party.
